Tips:

The biggest thing I learned is: Walking on soft sand is HARD WORK. Walking on hard sand is soft work. :-) The sand almost all of the way from the New River to Floras Lake is soft. Very strenuous. Sand Gators are VERY important. We had very, very little sand in our shoes with the Gators.

As we were struggling through the soft sand, we were trying to think-up some sort of shoe that would make this easier. Maybe some kind of snow-shoe type thing? Suggestions?

Also, wear 2 pairs of hiking socks! I didn't and got a nasty blister on my left heal. Other folks have worn two pairs with boots that weren't really broken in,and had no problems. On the last day, I wore two pairs, and that made all the difference.

Speaking of blisters, a blister first-aid kit is REQUIRED! We bought a little kit from REI that included a bunch of "moleskin", antiseptic wipes, scissors, new skin, and a bunch of other stuff. All in a package smaller than a wallet. Came in very handy (and comforting) with my blister.

Also, 6 litres of water between the two of us was not quite enough. We ended up having to filter, treat, and boil water from the New River for dinner the first night. Even after all that, the water had a wierd Algae-like taste. Didn't hurt us though...9 Litres would have probably been enough.

We almost didn't bring the GPS, but it came in quite handy. It was nice knowing how far we went, and how far we needed to go. Didn't use the ham rig, but we did use the cell phone quite a bit (read the Cape Blanco report).
